A major explosion at the Helene Curtis beauty aid plant in Chicago's Northwest Side injured 75 to 100 people and damaged a 16-building complex. Shattered windows stretched 20 blocks as acrid chemical fumes spread. St. Anne's reported 50 to 100 injured with others sent to two more hospitals. No deaths reported yet.
In a westward building fifty windows and three skylights shattered as an explosion tore fixtures loose and caused a fire that was controlled within an hour. Fire department snorkels rescued victims from upper levels while onlookers described a massive smoke cloud near the Helene Curtis plant, headquarters for a firm reporting 54 million dollars in business last year.
