Fred Turner of Tams, 36, was hospitalized with severe cramps in the abdomen, legs, and chest after a spider bit his left middle finger while he lifted a board for his half-built hog pen. He reported not feeling kindly toward black spiders. An attendant said he would go home today.
State police hunted a timber truck driver after his vehicle struck CCC recruit Enrollee Gilbert Congelo in Mingo county near Camp Raleigh. Congelo, 17, of Thacker Mines, was hospitalized with a broken right femur, facial cuts, and a torn tongue. witnesses could not identify the truck, described as a large lumber hauler, before nightfall.
Governor H G Kump pledges direct action in probing state liquor commission if Chairman Homer Stephenson’s illness worsens. Republican candidate Judge Summers Sharp accuses liquor firms of dealing with the commission via political agents. The commission bought 4000 cases, none from 19 suspended firms, with 35,000 more in warehouses.
President William Green named three negotiators to confer with ten unions listed for insurrection as efforts to reunite the divided American Federation of Labor continue. John L. Lewis, UMW chief, demands the federation clarify reinstatement of the ousted group before talks.
Charleston the Kanawha coal operators association reelected President C A Caswell at the annual meeting today. Officers renamed include W C Mitchell of Plymouth vice president John L Dickinson treasurer and D C Kennedy executive secretary.
Huntington Cabell October grand jury reports no indictments for larceny at the state hospital. It cites irregularities and poor management but notes insufficient evidence against Ezra E Knight suspended superintendent Joe Ward suspended chief carpenter and Charles D Buckner electrician. Governor Kump linked accusations to political motives.
Henry Lilly, 48, of East Beckley, awaiting surgery, said he will sue Albert Gregory for injuries to his left eye. Lilly claims Gregory assaulted him as he returned from Central grade school with two Republicans to register, in front of the Memorial building before a Democratic rally. Gregory, a former city patrolman, is implicated.
Raleigh counties October grand jury will return 112 indictments when it meets Monday morning. More than 180 witnesses testified across 81 felonies and 31 misdemeanors docketed by the prosecutor. The term's grand jury docket is described as the largest in years and includes a manslaughter charge against Douglas Lewis for the wreck that killed Aubrey Kid Martin. Five murder cases await action against Carlos Allen Linda Gaines Divers Thompson Kenneth Wyatt and Lula Dillon.
Dr. Carl G. Campbell director of CCC education in Charleston district camps accredits Camp Raleigh with 3594 man-hours of job instruction in September, about 200 hours more than any other camp in the district. Camp Raleigh enrollees receive instruction in machine operation explosives culvert and small bridge construction road building and allied subjects under project supervision.
Roy N McIntosh formerly of Beckley died after a lengthy illness in a Washington D C hospital at age 37 He was born December 25 1898 in Raleigh County Surviving are his widow Thelma and two daughters Charmian and Patty McIntosh and two sisters Nelle Noel and Beatrice McIntosh Funeral services will be at First Christian church Friday at 2 p m with Rev Ross Culpepper and burial in Wildwood cemetery
Wayne Farley, 19, of Hotchkiss, remained in a stupor 20 hours after a tree limb struck him, causing a cerebral concussion. An attaché at Raleigh General Hospital did not deem the injuries serious.
Raleigh county public assistance council will meet in the Memorial building on Thursday October 22 to select a chairman and outline administration under the state social security act. John F. Bolen says the appointment of a county welfare director may be discussed, with eligible candidates Edgar W. Worrell R. E. MecWhorter and Larry A. Dodd of Beckley certified. Applications await county organization and tax funds, with the program expected to start by November 1. Other council members include E. E. Bibb George W. Bright Perry A. Cook and F. C. Colcord.
Welch-Roy Sturgill, 35, a Norfolk and Western railroad employee, died in a hospital last night after accidentally contacting a high voltage carrier of the line's electrification system. Officials said he was working on a mobile crane at Rodeveld.
Circuit Clerk Van Hunter announced Beckley Newspapers will print general election ballots for Raleigh County with 77 voting places on November 3. Bid totals: 55,000 regular ballots and 1,000 sample ballots costing $278.10. Other bids: Woodward Commercial Printing $360.64 and Gentry Brothers Printing $330.
The Resettlement Administration plans a Raleigh County horse comeback. Officials like O P Westfall urge farmers to buy mares and locally breed to reduce imports. A pure bred Percheron stallion, insured and overseen by J J Davis, has been introduced alongside 42 mares and 90 head brought in last year. Livestock loans fund purchases under active Raleigh plans totaling 30,089 with 22,345 spent on livestock.
Allen Mills a 70 year old Sophia farmer was arrested after officers found a still and moonshine whiskey in his home. U S Commissioner W H Bardin ordered him held for federal grand jury action.
New York Senator Joseph F Guffey chairman of the Democratic senatorial campaign committee states the DuPont family and associates contributed 383000 to the Republican national campaign through Sept 30 He claims an extensive investigation supports a total exceeding 750000 by election time and warns of more to come.
General Electric Co reported nine months ended September 30 net income of 26,533,667 dollars, 92 cents per share, up from 17,205,232 dollars or 62 cents in the prior year. Net sales totaled 189,263,156 dollars, versus 149,173,275 dollars a year ago. No federal income tax provision was required.

He backed the Democratic ticket for reelection and warned that voting for Alf Landon would mean four more years of Hooverism.
A 390000 estimate reports 150000 marchers in Chicago as President Franklin D. Roosevelt rode an open car escorted by 30 motorcycle police. The two mile Madison street procession to the Chicago stadium drew thousands along Grant Park and the lakefront, with 52 bands playing as fireworks and a 25 foot image of the president lit up the building. Police captain Kilroy called it the biggest crowd he had seen.
