Sky Shield II tests air defense with wide drill
Thought For Today notes Sorrow's best antidote is employment. Operation Sky Shield II is a continental air defense exercise rerun from a year ago. It spans twice the duration of Sky Shield I and includes FAA rules banning nonparticipating flights. NORAD defends with SAC bombers. About 2,000 planes, 250,000 people, and 6,000 sorties are planned. Weather will not halt the drill. FAA regulation allows emergency flights. Airlines anticipate fare losses but cooperate to support defense. The piece also discusses church state aid debates over educational TV in Maryland, focusing on St. Mary’s Catholic School of Hagerstown seeking to join a county network and the public funding implications.

Seat belt era grows as states push mandates
Bruce Biossat notes slow progress toward safety in cars with belts. Wisconsin's new law makes seat belts mandatory on all 62 model cars. New York joins Michigan and California requiring metal belt anchorages for new cars after Oct 1, 1962. Federal rule from 1962 model year requires front and rear anchorages in all purchases. Only 3 percent of cars have belts, 36 percent of belt wearers use them always. Sweden leads with shoulder harnesses on over half of cars. Surgeon General Luther Terry cites 70 percent of drivers face an accident in five years. 5,000 lives could be saved in 1960 with belts. Tests show many belts fail under crash, urging strict industry standards and quality checks. Amen.
