US and allied forces press toward Pyongyang with spearheads within 80 miles of the capital. Two Rok divisions mop up holdouts along the east coast port of Wonsan, an oil refinery and arsenal city of 150,000. Kumhwa Falls as Sixth Division drives ahead on a 30 mile front, widening gaps in the Reds’ border defenses.
General Gay told correspondents the opening phase of the U N drive into Red Korea was satisfactory. He estimated the Reds could still deploy up to 25 000 troops, remnants of a 150 000 man force with Chinese trained divisions. He noted the enemy may be pulling out with no tanks and little artillery, though land mines along the Pyongyang road presented a problem as small arms and mortar fire struck advancing cavalry.
The government imposes down payment and payoff limits on new home mortgages starting tomorrow. Non veteran buyers face 10 to 50 percent down, mortgages must be paid in 20 years unless very small houses qualify for 25 years, and veterans see 5 to 45 percent down with up to 30 year terms. Rules cover new houses begun since Aug 3 and all FHA VA loans, excluding existing homes and multi unit projects.
HAL BOYLE tells how a tall young American behind enemy lines in Korea was saved by a South Korean villager who risked his life and family to hide him. For sixty days Hicks lived in holes and rice meals while the Korean hid him from Red patrols and helped guide him to American lines as the front collapsed.
Berlin report says American reinforcements are arriving now in Germany as replacements rather than new units. General Eddy notes the Berlin garrison may see increased strength first and denies any evacuation plan. He cites Korea lessons and mentions the Pershing tank as the future standard in Western Germany.
Government survey shows retail food prices rose 1.4 percent in the last two weeks of September, lifting the index 2.7 percent above June 15 and 1.7 percent above August 28. Milk eggs butter coffee and meats led gains while pork chops and sugar fell. The Oct 2 index stood at 210.1 in 1935-39 base, with July 1948 peak at 216.8.

President Truman may discuss Asian security with General MacArthur this weekend in Tokyo. MacArthur is expected to pressure for a strong United Nations force to halt a wider Communist threat after Korea. Tokyo officials believe he will push Asia wide dangers and support for French Indochina and Formosa.
Joseph F Taraczkozy 36 of Calloway Heights killed at Raleigh Wyoming Mining Co Glen Rogers mine when crushed between a motor and an overhead timber. A track man he fell onto a moving motor as it passed beneath timber. He served in the Air Force and lived with his mother Mrs Elizabeth Taraczkozy. survived by four sisters and five brothers. Washington unions representing about one million railroad workers announced a plan to seek a 25 cent hourly wage increase. George E. Leighty, head of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers, said notices would go to major railroads on Oct 25 for immediate negotiations. The move would raise average weekly earnings from $60.15 by about $10, affecting shop crafts, telegraphers, clerks, signaling men, water service and dining car staff.
A Seattle waterfront warehouse held 700 tons of powdered eggs from Communist China awaiting shipment to New York for distribution to Eastern bakeries. Representative Mitchell pressed for a government investigation amid U S parity price policy. The AFL union called it a blow to American labor while brokers note long-standing imports and price disparities.
United States Steel Corp will open wage negotiations with the CIO United Steelworkers on October 16 in Pittsburgh. The union seeks a substantial fourth postwar pay hike to cover rising living costs. A battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, one of Britain’s oldest regiments, embarked at Southampton to join United Nations forces in Korea. The force of 970 officers and men is expected to reach Singapore in about a month. The battalion had been in Britain eight months after 19 years overseas.
