Unrest After Failed Coup Try in Jakarta

Reports say Islamic groups involved in last Friday's attempt to overthrow President Sukarno remain at large. After setting fire to the Communist headquarters, youths roamed Jakarta directing revolutionary signs at government fronts while the army accused a youth wing of the coup leaders. The military launched a broad anti-Communist drive, seizing PKI members and weapons amid foreign reporting of Peking influence. Demonstrators later marched past the U.S. embassy shouting pro American slogans.

US paratroopers and Australian infantry used tear gas to flush guerrillas from hiding in a major offensive near the Iron Triangle south of Saigon. The 173rd Airborne Brigade commander ordered gas as US and Vietnamese forces advanced behind mortars and fixed fires. Air and artillery strikes struck targets in North Vietnam, including near Dien Bien Phu and Vinh.

In Oroville California a head on collision inside a tunnel used for earth haul for the Oroville dam sparked a fiery explosion. Three crewmen were visible in the shaft with a fourth believed dead as crews worked to extricate them. One or more bodies were trapped as police awaited kin notification. The blast blackened almost 100 acres as diesel fuel burned.

Hinton Next Stop For Traveling Statehouse

A 20000 ton tanker with 45 crew listed 20 degrees to port near Boston harbor after striking an unidentified object. Reports say the vessel was in immediate danger of sinking and two injuries occurred while no evacuation plan was in place. A 400-foot gash along the side appeared after the collision.

President Johnson undergoes gall bladder and kidney stone removal

President Johnson underwent two hours and 15 minutes of major surgery for removal of his gall bladder and a kidney stone. Press Secretary Bill Moyers said he tolerated anesthesia well and was able to converse after waking. The operation began at 7 a.m. and ended 9:15 a.m. with a stone also removed from the ureter. Doctor George A. from Mayo Clinic led the team, and Mrs. Johnson and their daughter were present at the hospital during surgery.
