Wellsburg High Damaged by Fire

Wellsburg High School suffered a $100,000 fire damaging basement rooms and the auditorium gymnasium. Classes were suspended as workmen repair the damage. The blaze, starting in a room housing a booster pump for the steam system, was reported by a Pennsylvania Railroad employee across the river at Brilliant, Ohio. Wellsburg and Follansbee firefighters battled the flames for about three hours using gas masks due to intense heat and smoke.

Two Safes Robbed in County by Audre y Riffe

State Police linked two robberies at Shady Spring High School and Raleigh Motor Sales as the work of one outfit. Each safe held more than 300 dollars, with the school safe damaged and doors torn. Entry was gained via a basement window and a lock on the building.

Skelton Plant Begins Operations at Beckley Factory

Operations began today in the new Beckley Manufacturing Co. building at Skelton. Ninety women who had worked as a pilot crew at the Prince Street temporary office started in the new facility. Equipment was moved into the building Saturday.

Beclleyans Vote Early In Municipal Election

City Recorder T. E. Bazzarre Jr. reported twelve Beckley residents have cast ballots for the municipal election tomorrow. Twelve ballots came from sick voters confined at home or in hospital, with three cast Saturday and nine this morning. Ballots are sealed and will be presented to receiving commissioners at the proper precincts.

A forest fire was reported this morning near Crickmer in Fayette County, raising District 4 totals to seven since Saturday. Six fires occurred Sunday and included two acres burned at Dry Hill, a small blaze at Eccles, another small fire at White Sulphur Springs, and three fires in McDowell County.
