Strip Mine Reforestation Seen As Wartime Recovery Effort
J W Lambert and Ty M Boxley describe strip mining in New River holdings on Baloff Mountain as reclaimable land ideal for reforestation. They note rapid regrowth, leveling, drainage, and coal recovery making the operation a wartime salvage, with coal fed directly to the war effort and lands later restored for forests.
