Director orders fast corrective steps at Lakin
Charleston. Mental Health Director Fred Bateman said measures are being undertaken with urgency to correct deplorable conditions revealed by a grand jury at Lakin State Hospital near Pt Pleasant. The 22 page report urged sweeping reforms and noted malfeasance by state officials. Governor Smith withheld comment until he receives the report. Byrne, who took over two weeks ago, said the 1966 Legislature must act for improvement. He cited a $1.2 million request for repairs and an estimated $1.35 million budget next year. He said it would take months to straighten administrative problems. The report also touched on sexual immorality among patients and staff, a claim both doctors said is not unique to this institution. Two employees were indicted for fornication with a patient.

Two Negro Marines Arrested After Anti Klan Rampage
In Fayetteville North Carolina two Black Marines based at Camp Lejeune were detained on multiple charges after a weekend spree that wounded four, broke an elderly woman’s hip, and kidnapped a white family. Police said victims had no links to the Klan and described a racial escalation with a gunfire attack in a predominantly Black neighborhood near the center.

Eight Die On West Virginia Highways Weekend
United Press International reports eight people were killed in West Virginia highway crashes over the weekend. A Morgantown wreck killed H. J. Pitzenberg, 20, and Ronald E. $20 Million Asked For New State Hospitals

More than 1,000 firefighters battled 137 wildfires across West Virginia on Sunday as officials warned the weather could worsen.
