Minors Back Where They Started New Setup Plan Fails
Baylor starred for the Minneapolis Lakers with 26 points to beat the Philadelphia Warriors 103-101 and move to first in the Western Division at 4-2 as Elgin Baylor leads Rookie of the Year chase. Gola and Graboski led Philadelphia with 22 and 20 respectively. In Memphis, talks over minor league realignment collapsed after a Wichita to Louisville move left the American Association with seven clubs and no clear path to expansion. Texas League and Western League finances faltered, signaling a likely standstill ahead of the 1959 season reform talks.

Roles Reversed In Title Between Iowa And Minn
MINNEAPOLIS AP It wasn’t long ago when Iowa was the threadbare cousin of the corn belt football family and Minnesota bossed the farm. Saturday the onetime poor relation comes back to Minneapolis as a national championship contender. The neighbor that used to live so high off the football hog is starving. Minnesota hasn’t won a game since November 1957. Since then it has lost nine in a row, six this season. Iowa, an exciting team with a backfield packing sprinted speed and an All America candidate quarterback in Randy Duncan, doesn’t want to slip in this one with the Big Ten title so close. It also can bolster its case for high national ranking—the Hawk eyes are No. 2 in the Associated Press poll—with a decisive victory. The Gophers need a victory more dearly, if anything, than Iowa. They are in precarious danger of going through an entire season without winning—a horrible prospect for a school that once won six Big Ten titles in eight seasons. After Iowa, Minnesota draws Michigan State and Wisconsin. To win, the Gophers will have to find a way to stop two weapons that have devised them all season—speed and passing. Iowa has plenty of both with Duncan throwing and Kevin Furlong, Ray Jauch, Willie Fleming and Bob Jeter running. Injuries to veteran players and an all-sophomore backfield aren’t the best antidotes, and Minnesota has both.
