Democrat John C. Ward won the Raleigh County Court commissioner seat with 17,472 votes to 7,905 over Blakely. Ward led early and held a large margin as unofficial returns from 114 precincts came in. Precinct 115 Long Bottom was the final precinct to report, arriving at the courthouse around 11 a.m. The ballot box and returns were delivered by Mrs. Virginia Reed who has recounted rising at 3 a.m. to travel from Richmond District. Her route includes a boat ride, walking to Hinton, then a bus to Beckley before reaching the courthouse.

Two Trials Start in Raleigh County Court
Two trials began today in Raleigh County Criminal Court. In Circuit Court, Beckley attorney George Ballard sat for Judge Harry McCreery with a jury impaneled on a contested battery case. In the Criminal Courtroom, a jury heard Paul E. Mann charged with drunk driving after his arrest on January 19, 1958 on East Prince Street by Beckley Patrolmen Fred Burdiss and Edward Easley. An officer testified to odor of alcohol and a breathalyzer reading of .21, above the .15 threshold. Mann’s attorney Brown H. Payne challenged the breathalyzer report, arguing the device is only a test and not proof, and claimed asthma contributed to his client’s condition.

Mrs Elaine Beverly 46 Gauley Bridge and her husband Marshall will be given lie detector tests in Charleston today in the murder of George Snelling also of Gauley Bridge. Beverly held on a murder warrant and told prosecutor Zane Summerfield her husband was drunk Tuesday night and she shot at a man at her kitchen door. She said she did not know if she hit him and her husband did not know about the murder due to his condition. A post mortem will be done at Laird Memorial Hospital Montgomery this afternoon.
