Fast-Gaining Bull Calves Best Prospects for New Herd Sires
Virginia researchers report that selecting fast gaining sires can raise calf growth rates and overall beef production. Dr. C M Kincaid and colleagues estimate heritability for growth at about one third, and advise progeny testing alongside bull tests to weed underperforming sires. If growth reaches 2 pounds daily in 5–7 years, beef production could rise by about 9 million pounds annually with static cattle numbers. The study, begun in 1947, involves 117 bulls and supports Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement programs with some 75 enrolled herds.

Bulk Milk Tank Coolers Handicapping Dairymen
Ohio State economist Elmer F. Baumer notes bulk tank cooling can cut hauling and labor while improving quality checks but the high cost and need for house modifications deter adoption. Limited tank capacity and route disruption also pose risks as major producers move first to bulk systems. About 500 of 27,000 Grade A Ohio producers use bulk tanks.

Artificial Lights On Egg Production
Artificial lights in the poultry house can boost egg production during short daylight months. VPI specialists note lights may start early or run all night to provide a 13 or 14 hour day, using a 40 watt bulb or two smaller bulbs in larger houses.

Antibiotics to Improve Meat Keeping Qualities
An Ohio research chemist from the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station urged using antibiotics to extend fresh meat shelf life and aid distribution. Dr. F. E. Deatherage described tests showing meat with tiny antibiotic residues resists bacterial growth up to 72 hours without refrigeration and could enable consumer packaged meat deliveries, with potential benefits for countries lacking refrigeration. Further research is needed to determine true value for foods beyond meat.

Farmers See Surpluses as Villain Behind Farm Troubles
Pendleton Oregon residents on the traveling Senate Agriculture Committee hearings blamed the seven billion dollar stock of farm surpluses for low prices. Farmers urged destroying surpluses and questioned why food cannot be used abroad. They urged a broad program to curtail production until surpluses are disposed of and farm output aligns with needs.

Cull Non-Layers Now For Better Egg Return
Ohio State University extension poultryman Emil Malinovsky urges culling poorly developed pullets before housing to boost winter egg returns. He says keep only healthy high production pullets for the first eight to ten months, and remove injured birds immediately. Heavy culling of a good flock may remove birds profitable under proper management.
