Five Petersburg Children Die In Flames
Five children aged 3 to 16 perished in a South Petersburg fire that trapped them on the second floor of a two story frame house. Four were siblings and their cousin died as a result of the blaze that consumed the home. The dead were Anglee Mongold 16 Shirley Lee George 11 Caroline Sue George 8 Larry George 4 and Derry Alvin George 3. Mrs Mongold and Mrs Foster George are sisters daughters of Floyd Harrison who owned the house. Mrs Harrison 54 was badly burned and hospitalized in Cumberland Maryland. The fire started when Mrs Mongold lit a stove on the first floor and an unprotected pipe led flames upward. Firemen arrived as the upper floor collapsed. The Red Cross aided the homeless families.

Two Owners Kill Dogs Warned By Sheriff

Beaver Lions dedicated a $15,000 limestone recreation center Monday night for use by the community, the county school system, and the club. The 36 by 72 foot, 10 foot high building houses auditorium kitchen office and stage with a 235 seat capacity. Lions district president Wood Poling of Mt Hope presided as Lawrence W. Pruett presented the center to Beaver Lions Club president Tracy Shannon. Raleigh County Board of Education members attended along with school officials, and Woodrow Wilson High School students performed. Construction began last Thanksgiving and was completed Saturday.
