The New Jersey and Newcastle shelled coastal batteries near the Amgok peninsula as spotter planes directed fire. The New Jersey, off the West Coast for the first time since 1951, opened at 9 am from seaward positions, with forward guns blasting emplacements 10 miles inland.

Dempsey R. Wriston of Clear Creek was found guilty of fraud and fined $20 plus costs by Magistrate T N Thurman. The arrest warrant stated Wriston failed to report earnings from Ceval Collieries Inc while receiving $25 in benefits from the West Virginia Department of Employment Security. Winston was arrested by Constable Carlos Jarrell.

Gilbert Mills a 19 year old Compton California sailor stationed at Norman Naval Base drove to Oklahoma City to marry. After a highway accident near the city he was arrested for failing to report it but Navy cops found no code covering such a case. His father in law intervened, the wedding proceeded, and Mills spent the night at base headquarters.
Settlement of a Budd Company strike, supplier of auto stampings, provided the first break in a wave of layoffs crippling the auto industry. About 44,000 Chrysler Corp employees idled by the Budd walkout were expected to return to work within a day or two.
Basil Cuckler 45 and his wife Thelma were fined 50 dollars each and costs on possession and sale of moonshine whisky after pleading no contest before Magistrate J P Meadows. Thirteen Holstein cattle were struck and killed by lightning Sunday at the Orville L Williams dairy near WWNR towers in Mt Tab or. The loss is estimated at 6000 dollars with six bred heifers and seven milk cows. The dairy, uninsure d, has 26 years of operation and the animals were sheltering in a grove when the strike occurred. Neighbor Gwinn Holliday reported seeing lightning hit the area. The cows were found during milking about 3 p.m.
Ground breaking and erection of a foreman's shed began today at the site of a new electronics parts plant near the Beckley Mt Hope Airport. Bettina Construction Co. of Beckley is performing the first work under a sub contract from Byus Mankin Lumber Co. The factory will cover 25,000 square feet and cost 160000, including land, building, heating system and electrical ducts. An official ceremony may be held later when the steel is up, says C C Darrah Appalachian Electric Power Co engineer.
OAK HILL Frank Duncan a State Road Commission employee was admitted to Oak Hill Hospital at 9 a.m. for burns after using gasoline to heat tar. Dr D C Newell said the blaze set his clothing on fire causing second degree burns to about 50 percent of his body. The accident occurred on the Salem road about a mile from the doctor’s home with serious burns to his legs and left arm.
Mabel Rice of MacArthur was fined $50 and costs after arraignment before Magistrate T. N. Thurman on a driving while intoxicated charge. State Troopers C. M. England and R. C. Warfe arrested her Sunday, and she was lodged in Raleigh County jail before the hearing.
A Sunday incident in Grand View left three year old Mullens girl Martha Ellen Musser unconscious after being struck in the abdomen by a swinging playground swing. She received treatment at Raleigh General Hospital.
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the New Orleans Times-Picayune Publishing Co did not violate the Sherman Antitrust Act with its advertising sales policy. The DOJ had argued a forced rate method harmed rival New Orleans Item.
