Freeman Plan aims to curb oversupply and boost farm consumption
The Freeman Plan proposes new committees appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to draft production controls for every oversupplied commodity. Approved by two thirds of farmers in a referendum, it would replace current laws if Congress supports it. Critics warn of massive bureaucracy and high costs, while Freeman says overall costs could fall. The plan signals stricter controls and possible shifts in subsidies to align production with consumption.

Agriculture Dept forecasts higher feed grain prices in 1961 62
Agriculture Department economists predict higher feed grain prices next season due to acreage cuts and raised price supports under the 1961 program. The department notes farmers remove millions of acres of corn and grain sorghum from production while a potential surplus sale authority adds uncertainty. Corn prices likely to rise as 1960 grain remains under price support and free market supply shrinks.

Hold the drill perpendicular to the work or use a square for sighting. Clamp two boards together and drill in one pass. For wood screw holes undersize by about one third. Use a bit smaller than the screw. In metal, drill the hole the same size as the fastener. For self tapping screws in sheet metal, make the hole slightly smaller.

Weather and grain gains noted in national crops report
The weekly weather and crop bulletin shows little change for winter wheat in the northern Great Plains as May 15 passed, with cool temperatures and steady prospects for Colorado and Kansas. Central and southern Great Plains see improvements as moisture and seasonal warmth aid fall-sown grains and rapid maturation, while the USDA funds include a 205,720 grant to the Pasteur Institute for wheat and barley protein studies. Secretary Freeman advocates higher U S grain exports through quality breadgrain and promotes the family farm as a democratic strength against world communism.
