18 Die In Globemaster Crash Near McChord Field
TACOMA Washington UP I reports a C124 Globemaster failed to climb after takeoff from McChord Field killing 18 of 22 aboard. Four crewmen were in critical condition at Madigan General Hospital. Witnesses described wreckage scattering over a wide area as the plane dropped from about 500 feet after five miles of flight.

An interracial Freedom Riders caravan left Montgomery Alabama under heavy guard headed toward Jackson Mississippi along Highway 80 escorted by 16 highway patrol cars and guardsmen. A Justice Department note said assurances were given by Mississippi officials that the students would not be harmed. Governor Barnett urged calm and warned arrests if segregation laws were violated. FBI crime report shows rises in early 1961 across offenses
The FBI uniform crime report for January to March 1961 shows murders up 9 percent, forcible rapes 2 percent higher, and aggravated assaults 3 percent higher. Hoover warned of a record high crime level, with a 10 percent jump in serious offenses, while rapes surged 41 percent in 28 mid sized cities. Pickpocketing fell 18 percent but purse snatchings rose 24 percent and shoplifting 21 percent. All other thefts rose over 2 percent.
