Building Looks Same but Is Modern Inside
Renovators of Vanderhorst row, one of the oldest apartment houses in the United States, have restored the exterior of the big brick structure on the waterfront in Charleston. But the interior, built by General Arnoldus Van derhorst in 1800, now shows lights, radios, portable telephones, fan plugs in each room, electric heaters, showers, and other innovations that would have puzzled the original occupants.

Father seeks custody change in Reno custody dispute
In Reno on May 21 seven year old Jane Bannister became the focus of a renewed custody fight between her divorced parents, Harry Bannister and film actress Ann Harding. Bannister asks the Washoe county district court to set aside a decree granting Harding exclusive control, seeking to restore an older separation agreement giving him two months of custody annually. A hearing was requested for May 26 or soon after, with Bannister claiming an affidavit alleging grounds for partial or absolute custody due to Harding's conduct. Harding’s counsel in Los Angeles dismissed the move as unjustified, noting California courts resolved the matter last October.

AFL Executives Delay Problem
The AFL executive council adjourned without final action on two key questions. It shelved discipline of the United Mine Workers and other unions amid efforts to reconcile craft and industrial differences. It left for next month’s conventions a vote on amending the federal constitution to permit social justice legislation and urged Congress to include the Wagner-Ellenbogen housing bill on the must list. It also called for Cuban labor protection and supported the southern sharecroppers' strike.
