Dr. C Frank Bishop Extension plant pathologist and entomologist offers pest control tips for home gardens and small fruit crops. Flea beetles threaten early potatoes and tomatoes. use DDT sprays for large potato patches and methoxychlor in home gardens. Cabbage worms rise as cabbage butterflies appear. dust crucifers regularly, combine methoxychlor and malathion. For raspberries and grapes, apply captan plus DDT or ferbam plus DDT before flowering and again at fruit size, noting flea beetle activity on buds.

New Formula In Calf Growing Cuts Costs and Scours
Dr. G C Graf of Texas A and M reports a new fatty ester additive for milk replacer that supplies fat and prevents nutrition related scours. Made from vegetable oil by products, the formula is home-mixable and storage friendly. The study shows a daily cost drop from about 50 cents to 15 cents per calf and allows abrupt switch from colostrum to replacer. Current feeds include dried skim milk, dried whey, anti scour additive, antibiotic source, and stabilized vitamin A per 100 pounds of milk.
