The Associated Press reports the six day walkout by firemen on five major rail systems ended. Striking workers are ordered back to work and carriers plan to resume passenger and freight service quickly as disruptions ease. The settlement follows demands by the firemen and ends the worst national railroad strike in four years.
The first yard crews returned to duty at 6 30 a m as New York Central moved to resume traffic. Ohio Central division led the restart with through freight from Hobson Ohio to Dickinson and coal trains anticipated in above average numbers. Passenger service in Charleston resumes tomorrow with No 5 and No 6 delayed. The Virginian Railroad Roanoke Charleston run should arrive on schedule after terminating service at Page, and NYC workers across Charleston area return to shifts. The strike ended with unions and carriers settling over the diesel locomotive fireman issue, arbitration to address remaining concerns, and wage parity across locomotive types.
Beckley gears up for Armed Forces Day with marching order for Saturday parade talents from Trap Hill Stratton Shady Spring Sophia Byrd Prillerman Mark Twain and Stoco. He was thrown from the car and was returning from visiting his wife and family in Chapel Virginia. The former Rhodell man had been employed there. The body lies at Williams Funeral Home in Sophia pending relatives arrival. Police continue investigation.
City police investigate a robbery at the C. and L. Cut Rate Drug Store on Neville Street and an attempted entry at the Mademoiselle Dress Shop in the Raleigh County Bank Building. Loot from the C. and L. included wrist watches cigarette lighters and other merchandise, per Police Chief Anthony Scalise.
The West Virginia Supreme Court corrected an error after discovering a document had misread "refused" as "granted" in Hedrick case. Hedrick of Beckley appealed the $2,000 Raleigh Circuit Court judgment against Beckley Ice Cream Company.

In Charleston a $224417.50 road improvement contract for US Route 52 in Wayne and surrounding counties was awarded to Smith Construction Company of Huntington.
Tom Watson of MacArthur died at 3 a m today in Raleigh County Jail. The examining physician Dr Milton Butts ruled the death as due to heart disease. Watson was committed May 10 on an insanity warrant, and Jailer W F Bowles supervised the case. His body, aged about 68 to 70, was sent to Keyser Funeral Home for arrangements.
Raleigh County Court accepted Earl F. Martins resignation as constable of Town District and appointed Jennings George to fill the vacancy on Martins recommendation. Humane Society representatives were to discuss funding for a permanent stray dogs haven in the county budget at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
Donnie Lee Marcum two month old son of Mr and Mrs Lafayette Marcum Omar died in a hospital last night of spinal meningitis. Health department said the case is the fifth reported in Logan County this year and the first to end in death.
Trygve Lie held a 90 minute conference with Prime Minister Stalin then met Wang Chia hsiang the Chinese Communist ambassador in Moscow. They discussed China's UN representation as diplomats note the session followed the Lie Stalin talks in a push to save the UN. No details were released on the Lie Stalin meeting though Russia reportedly refused to seat Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government.
John L Lewis refused to appear voluntarily before a House labor subcommittee. He denied sending secret orders to miners during the last winter coal strike. Lewis issued a letter to Chairman Jacobs stating no such instructions were uttered or authorized by the United Mine Workers office. He argued the term whistle stop has no meaning in the coal industry.
Joseph Stern, 83, a prominent Parkersburg banker and businessman, died at his home after a long illness. He founded the Stern Brothers Store in 1897 and served as its president for 53 years.
