A four year old boy struck by a 1971 model truck in Beckley Sunday was treated and released from Raleigh General Hospital. No charges filed. The driver Harvey H Plumley 30 of Crab Orchard remained at large.
Rescue squad from Beckley Fire Department answered two calls. At 7:24 a.m. in front of the Elk's Club Miss Vicki Crawford 21 fainted and recovered at home after oxygen. At 10:40 a.m. at 213 Prince St Mrs Pearl Meadows 37 of Raleigh fainted and was taken by ambulance to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after oxygen.
W J Hopkins of Beaver sues C E Whalen Co Inc of Walton Ky in Beckley federal court claiming injuries from a March 6 1967 truck wreck into Pond Fork due to negligent excavations and debris in the creek. He seeks medical and lost income damages.
Ruth Elizabeth Watkins, 49, of Beckley was sentenced to one to five years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Obie Jones, 71, of Peace Springs Raleigh County. A probation motion was denied but a post conviction psychiatric examination was granted, with credit for three months already served. Jurors were ordered back for May 22.
The State Department of Highways seeks court approval to condemn two parcels from Ross P and Edith Daniel and additional parcels from Ora and Ray Massey G P Daniel Realty Co and James L and Tressie Wood to improve sight distance at the Glen Daniel C and O Railway crossing in Raleigh County. The project lowers grade on West Virginia 3 and aligns with Beckley Mining Co development.
Minnie Bruce and husband J E Bruce sue Clarence Pantoplus doing business as Fair Deal Market in Raleigh County Circuit Court. Trial set for 9 am Tuesday with a 15 juror panel from which final selection will be made. Attorneys for Bruce are A J Sparacino and C E Byron Jr. for Pantoplus G Berk Lynch and Jack Mann.
The State Department of Highways settled with Collis Amon of Bradley and Beckley National Bank before jurors were sworn in Raleigh County Circuit Court. Amon received 44000 for land in Bradley to support the Appalachian Development Highway linking Beckley and Sutton. SDH had offered 25000 and is acquiring several parcels for the roadway.
The United Press International note explains poodles originated as water dogs in Europe and were trained for bird retrieval.
In New Braunfels Texas floodwaters from the Guadalupe River left 12 to 20 people missing after three days of search efforts. Authorities say 15 drowned, with debris and snakes hindering salvage work as volunteers and police comb the muddy banks. Red Cross shelters remain open and federal disaster declarations are sought for multiple counties.
In Hollywood 1700 attended the Palladium ceremony as All in the Family led with six Emmys including best actor and actress in a comedy. Glenda Jackson swept best actress awards and Keith Michell won best dramatic actor for The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Columbo star Peter Falk won best actor in a dramatic series.

Mrs Katherine Y Griges 77 of Cranberry will have funeral services at 1 pm Wednesday in Melton Mortuary Chapel with Rev Thomas Kerrigan officiating. Burial follows at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Beckley. She died Sunday in a local nursing home. Born in Lithuania April 18 1895 she was daughter of Sam Vingres and the late wife of Dominick Griges. She lived in Cranberry 50 years and leaves son John D of Battle Creek Mich. A rosary at 7 30 pm Tuesday at Melton Mortuary led by Father Patrick McDonough.
The Rev James Gialdella 40 of Harper died at 7 30 am today from an apparent heart attack. The body remains at Melton Mortuary in Beckley awaiting funeral arrangements.
The West Virginia Society of Osteopathic Medicine named Dr. Earl C. Hahn of St. Marys as president during its three day annual meeting in Charleston. The event closes with an address by Dr. Marion E. Coy, president of the American Osteopathic Association.
John William Lytton, 39, of Beckley, withdrew his guilty plea to a federal indictment charging him with making a false bomb threat against United Airlines. A trial was set for July 12 after judges appointed new counsel for Lytton. The threats were telephoned from Beckley on July 15, 1971, and Lytton had earlier undergone psychiatric exams.
Winfred J. Rogers 57 of Meadow Bridge died today in a Beckley hospital at 2 a.m. after a long illness. He was the son of Mrs. Elsie Rogers of Grandview. The body is at Don Smathers Funeral Home in Rainelle.
