Auto Industry Slump Dampens Spring Business Boom
The auto sector laid off about 390,000 workers across 119 plants in 64 cities as General Motors halted operations for a day. The weakness hit stock markets, with Studebaker reporting a first-quarter loss of over 14 million dollars and seeking a defense contract or aircraft merger. Weather and high debt curb auto sales, while economists anticipate a later rebound with government defense spending and business investment offsetting the dip. Homebuilding improves with April contracts topping 1.1 billion dollars in 37 states east of the Rockies.
