Floodwaters spread across 40 percent of White County Illinois as the Little Wabash and Big Muddy neared all time highs. Gov Otto Kerner sought federal aid while Evansville Vincennes and other cities fought looting and levee breaches. The Red Cross reported over 19 000 affected across eight states as weather fronts moved east.

A mountainside collapse at Ringlet in central Malaya Valley buried 40 people alive. The landslide at a damsite followed heavy rains, and occurred Thursday about 140 miles north of Kuala Lumpur.
West Virginia personal income totalled 3.14 billion in 1960, up 2.9 percent from 1959, with per capita income rising to 1692. County figures show Cabell, Kanawha, Harrison, Logan, and Wood among the top earners, while 50 of 55 counties posted gains. Only Hancock, Jackson and Ohio counties exceeded the national per capita average.
In Jerusalem, Hans Globke, state secretary to West German Chancellor Adenauer, was linked to Nazi activity as a document placed him at a 1941 meeting about confiscating Jews’ property. Eichmann was not at the meeting but the trial referenced his role in directing actions against Jews. West Virginia releases its official 1961 highway map featuring Blackwater Falls on the cover and 25 points of interest. The cover uses Centennial colors and the map shows portions of Interstates 77 and 64 in Jackson Kanawha Cabell counties, open or soon-to-open. In Geneva the 14 nation conference on Laos was postponed at least until Saturday. A British spokesman gave the delay with no explanation after talks between Lord Home and Andrei Gromyko, co chairmen of the conference. No start date was set, but sources hoped talks might begin Saturday after the ICCH report said a general cease fire exists in Laos. Secretary Rusk, Home and French FM Couve de Murville studied the report.
Vice President Lyndon B Johnson told the South Viet Nam national assembly that the United States will increase aid to bolster military forces and the economy against Communist aggression. He met with President Ngo Dinh Diem, calling their talks a complete meeting of minds. Johnson cited cooperation on counter guerrilla forces and hinted at approving Diem's request to raise the armed forces from 150000 to 170000, though specifics were withheld for security reasons. The speech underscored U S resolve as Johnson began a 28500 mile Asian tour.

Two diplomats at the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City defected and sought asylum, accusing the regime of religious oppression and saying Havana packs the staff with Castro's secret police. Montano said only one genuine career diplomat remains. Portela named Ramino del Rio as a secret police captain. The refugees claimed the embassy serves as a center for distribution of surveillance and coercive activities.

Deuterium offered 3.75 million dollars and, if successful, 1500 to 2000 jobs. Jerome Spevack met with GSA officials Thursday, a meeting arranged by Senators Jennings Randolph and Robert Byrd. The firm manufactures heavy water.
West Virginia state parks and forests prepare for May 27 opening with remodeled cabins, new cabinets and baths, and ceramic tile fixtures. New swimming pools are ready at Kanawha State Forest near Charleston and Bluestone State Park near Hinton, with a third pool under construction at North Bend State Park in Ritchie County set for completion this summer.

Coal workers in seven-county District 29 of the United Mine Workers will receive about 3 million in mid-summer vacation pay.
