Many Changes In Banking Measure Would Reshape Rules
The Associated Press reports Washington outlines a sweeping banking bill. It would convert the temporary deposit insurance into a permanent statute up to 5000 per deposit and cut the insurance assessment to 0.125 percent on all deposits. The bill gives the president power to remove the Fed governor, merges the federal reserve agent duties with the governor, and lets the Fed board waive certain bank requirements to keep sound small banks in the system. It relaxes representation rules, lets the Fed decide bond trading, allows adjustable reserves with few restrictions, lifts stockholder assessment limits after July 1 1937, permits securities affiliates for reserve member banks, and orders the board to promote business stability and curb destabilizing fluctuations.
