Absenteeism and Pay Affect War Plant Labor
Absenteeism returns to trouble some war plants as green labor and cross region hiring rise to meet expanded production. Higher hourly wages lure workers to shop for better jobs, while housing woes and family illness keep others home. Men's average lost time is about nine days yearly, women about thirteen, with six day schedules worst. An Eastern metal plant notes absenteeism climbs as overtime nears 48 hours and drops toward 32 hours with five-day weeks. An equipment maker reports overtime periods increase absenteeism in defense orders.
