Bordeaux France two ship loads of 2806 Spanish refugees reached safety in France with British warship escort. Women with babies, old men, and children arrived at French ports fleeing the insurgent army. They left nearly all possessions but hold a pledge of refuge from the French government.
Two Woodrow Wilson high school seniors headline the 182 graduates for scholastic achievements. Maxine Hill is valedictorian and Eleanor Brooke Smith salutatorian, both with straight A final semester grades. Commencement exercises Friday May 28 will feature an address by Claude L. Smith of Charleston, former American Legion West Virginia commander and 1936 U S senate candidate.
Mrs Cassie A Bowers sold James Lilly 30 acres on Piney river in Shady Spring district. Kyle Fink bought lots 19 and 20 in section 11 of the South Beckley addition from South Beckley Land Co. W H File and Isaiah Irvine transferred seven lots in Westmoreland street to Mrs Ruth Irvine. Other filings include Frank Hart buying 6.16 acres along Glade creek in Shady Spring district for $600 from Leona Lilly.
Roy Graybeal, long employed in the amusement hall, is shifted to the lamp house at Lillybrook. He will start the last of the week in the new post.
Beatrice Whitehead of Sprague jailed on possession of stolen goods and Lillian Heaton of Princeton jailed on grand larceny after a local dry cleaning shop reported two suits missing in January. Barnett Twins, vaudeville performers, had left town with the outfits. Police traced one suit to a rear-yard burial as officers searched Whitehead home and an apartment in City avenue. Whitehead claimed she bought the suits from Heaton after they were left at the shop for 30 days. Heaton reported the loss to police before.
Woodrow Wilson high school presented an entertainment program at the Kiwanis weekly luncheon. Miss Lucia Williams and Miss Alpha Wooddell performed as vocalists with William J. Smith Jr. on piano. Glenn Sallack introduced it as an impromptu program due to late notice. the audience welcomed the effort. Beckley Kiwanis invite members to an intercity dinner and dance in Bluefield on May 24 honoring District Governor Huffard of Bluefield.
Lakehurst resident Allen Hagaman identified among dead as spectator who watched the airship’s mooring mast crash. The Hindenburg disaster claimed a life and authorities released the name of one spectator among the casualties.
Washington leaders in Congress voiced near unanimous concern that the Hindenburg crash would curb government dirigible programs. With the Macon disaster of 1935 still in memory there is little talk of new airship construction as the nation weighs military policy and air safety.
Early Berlin editions omitted the Hindenburg crash due to press deadlines and Ascension Day. Officials promised Zeppelin service would continue while a government communique lamented the tragedy and noted an airship under construction as Germany’s flag bearer. Berlin and Frankfort officials doubted reports before radiograms confirmed the disaster.
The Rev. I. N. Dickens, a courthouse preacher who marries couples as they obtain licenses, admitted he is married after saying otherwise. He told the Register he has wed more than 2,000 couples, with a personal regret that he never married himself. He added his wife won’t mind, planning to read the story to her at home.
The world’s largest airship, the Hindenburg, made a cautious landing at Lakehurst New Jersey. Within minutes a fire swept the vessel, the stern bursting into flames as ground crews secured lines and cables after a storm’s approach. Captain Max Pruss commanded the ship. Captain Ernst Lehmann had previously commanded.
Lakehurst N J The Hindenburg disaster triggered swift action by the American government to determine the cause. Thirty three dead or missing of 97 aboard, 65 survived. Officials opened inquiries with Dr Hans Luther present and three probable causes outlined by the ship’s designer Hugo Eckener involve hydrogen ignition, grounding spark, or a onboard fire. Secretary Roper appointed a board of inquiry expected to begin soon. a naval inquiry is certain due to the crash on naval property. The ship’s manifest was destroyed. deaths included a spectator. The American Legion announces a Mothers Day program at 8 p m tonight at the Memorial building. Commander Ellsworth Shriver leads the event with the Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion and Junior Auxiliary conducting the celebration.
