Tech Students Recognized At Opening May Day Event

West Virginia Institute of Technology honored students for academic and extracurricular achievements during Awards Day at the May Day festival. Recipients included Huling Spencer for Outstanding Tech Citizen, Marian McDonald Hiller, Kermit Bridges, Carol King, and Ruth St. Clair, with many department awards and athletic honors from campus leaders.

Settle Funeral Service Planned in Lansing Baptist Church

Funeral services for Sidney B. Settle 72 will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lansing Baptist Church with ministers Rev Leslie Martin and Rev Eugene Brown officiating. Burial follows in Lansing cemetery. Settle a Fayette County resident and retired coal miner was a Kaymoor Local Union 3875 UMWA member. He leaves his wife Betty Campbell Settle a son Lawrence Eleanor two daughters Eva Watson and Launa Carper two sisters Virgie Reese Lula McGuirk and four grandchildren. The body remains at Dodd Payne Mortuary Fayetteville until service time.

Oak Hill Curfew Moves to 9 30 DST

The Oak Hill city curfew for youths under 16 shifts from 9 p m EST to 9 30 p m daylight saving time. The curfew now applies daily including weekends with earlier weekday and later weekend hours previously in EST. The change follows a city ordinance adopted by the council last year.

Training Course Set For Scoutmasters

Scoutmasters training will be held at the Hill Farm near Fayetteville from 6 p m Saturday to 4 p m Sunday. Led by Charles Av Knalts Fay ette District training chairman the two day event will cover program planning coordination of activities Scouting skills and leadership methods. Plans will be made for spring camporee May 17 19 the Fayette County Scouts trip to the National Jamboree July 12 18 at Valley Forge Pa and the council camporees at Carnifax Ferry State Park May 31 and July 12.

Last Rites Set for Mrs. Nannie L. Jones in Mullens

Funeral services for Mrs. Nannie L. Jones, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church Mullens by Rev. Lawrence Berger. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Park. She died at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday after a short illness. Born in Buckingham County Virginia, she lived in Mullens 41 years and taught school 13 years before moving. Survivors include daughter Betty Yates and another daughter Willa Freeman, plus brother Prince A. Jones of Philadelphia. The body lies at Wrights Funeral Home until one hour before services.

Three men identified as George Payne Robert Harrison and Wilbur Whiteside waived to the grand jury Thursday in Fayette County Magistrate R C Godsey s court on burglary charges They were accused of breaking into Mrs Rufus Larbe s Kirks home on March 30 and stealing furniture valued at 344 A fourth suspect age 16 18 gave varied ages to enter the Army and draft records list him as 18

Recreation Board Invites Picnic Area Use in Whitesville

Whitesville area residents are invited to use the Comfort Recreation Center site for picnics outdoor gatherings and meetings. The 14 acre facility near Racine on Route 3 will include a swimming pool and indoor restrooms next week. A mowing party is proposed to cut grass around fields and grounds.

Vaughn to face charges in Charleston hearing

Mullens tavern operator William Vaughn known as Hotlips is ordered to appear May 15 in Charleston before the West Virginia Non Intoxication Beer Commission to testify on charges including possession and sale of alcohol on licensed premises and possession of gambling devices.

Mayetteville RNS reports C. T. Dodd, owner of Dodd's Home and Auto Supply Store, was treated at Laird Memorial Hospital in Montgomery after a power mower struck a metal bar, injuring his foot.
