Mullens Chamber Plans City Clean-Up Drive

Mullens Chamber of Commerce outlines a two week city clean-up drive from April 3 to April 15 with volunteer distributors and posters urging residents to join under the motto Clean-up fix-up and paint-up. The schedule covers targeted streets and alleys each day with additional efforts if needed. Chester C Cunningham promises extra garbage collection support and a street department truck will be available.

Oceana Seeks Town Water System Purchase and Rate Plan

The Town of Oceana asks the Public Service Commission to approve buying the water works from J C Evans doing business as Oceana Water Company for 32000. It plans 154090 in improvements financed by a bond issue and a new rate schedule including a 2 dollar monthly domestic charge and 4 dollar combined rate, with a future downward tiered charge at the 2 000 gallon level.

Funeral services for Samuel Rahal 28 World War II veteran and Woodrow Whison High School athlete will be at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church at 3 30 p m Sunday. Loraine McKinney age 14 son of Mr and Mrs D L McKinney of Fayetteville Route 2 is reported by Oak Hill Hospital attendants to be progressing satisfactorily after a dynamite blast Friday evening that cost him an eye a hand and part of an arm.

Ex Slave Elizabeth Price Dies at 110 in Virginia

Funeral services are incomplete for Elizabeth Price born a slave in Franklin County Virginia in 1840 who died in Floyd County at Mount Hope. She was 110 and kept active through a long life, quilting as a hobby. Survivors include daughter Frances Kessler and several children, 39 grandchildren, 90 great grandchildren, and 19 great great grandchildren.

All-Day Red Cross Drive Conducted Today in Oceana

An all-day drive in Oceana aims to raise 1400 dollars for the Wyoming County Red Cross Chapter under the Chamber of Commerce. Chambers president leads the effort with canvassers receiving guidance from county fund chair Jesse W. Morgan and county Red Cross officials. Morgan expects the goal to be reached before sundown.

Oak Hill Men Held For Robberies At Gauley Bridge

James J. Mc Daniels and Stentey I. Adams of Oak Hill are in Fayette County Jail awaiting investigation into three break ins at Gauley Bridge. Homes of Joe Ballard Clarence Tucker and Mrs Mary Brown reported entered with cash and valuables missing. Deputy Sheriff Luther Toney and Trooper J R Lilly led the probe after a late night spree.
