U S and South Vietnam strike North Viet Nam base

UPI reports U S and South Vietnamese jets attacked the Dong Hoi air base 65 miles north of the border in the first Vietnam war attack on a Communist air facility. About 15 American jets led a strike followed by 24 Skyraiders bombing runways depots hangars and barracks. Both sides said the raid damaged but returned safely. Chinese agency claimed several planes shot down.

Mills Says County Will Have To Pay Over Budget

Sheriff Mills warned Raleigh County will likely exceed the $20,000 mileage budget for fiscal 1965, with only $4,210.50 remaining. He said the court will have to cover any excess, noting high spending in the first half of the year under prior administration and reductions in sheriff staff.

Stars To Be Photographed From Gemini

CHICAGO. US astronauts will photograph stars from an orbiting Gemini craft in a potential astronomical breakthrough. Northwest ern University astronomer Karl G. Heinze says the mission marks a step toward larger telescopes in space. Target stars Gamma Velorum and Zeta Puppis lie about 1,000 light years away. Observations could reveal stars invisible from Earth due to atmospheric interference. Handheld cameras will capture images through the hatch or by astronauts leaving the craft.

Massive Viet Cong embassy bombing shocks Saigon

A Viet Cong death by own action squadron bombed the U S Embassy in Saigon with 200 to 250 pounds of TNT, killing at least 17 and injuring about 150. Deputy Ambassador A Alexis Johnson was wounded. U S and Vietnamese casualties were reported with Americans among the dead and many wounded. Retaliation and air raids were expected as Washington and Saigon assessed the attack.

Early Bird to Be Launched by Comsat Tuesday

Comsat announced that Early Bird, the first large scale communications satellite, will be launched from Cape Kennedy next Tuesday. Built by Hughes Aircraft for Comsat, the 85-pound satellite can handle 240 two way voice channels, data traffic or television as part of a 1967 global network plan approved by Congress in 1962.

Governor George Wallace, long known for resistance to integration, met with an interracial civil rights delegation outside the Alabama Capitol, receiving a petition for democracy and voting rights. Clay County Listed As State's Poorest

Charleston report notes Clay County's per capita income at 750 dollars annually making it the poorest in West Virginia. About 1450 workers rely largely on government jobs including teachers and ADCa staff. Federal listing qualifies the county for 100 percent war on poverty aid due to lack of matching funds. Only 182 counties nationally meet the criteria.

Strong Quake in Aleutian Islands Reported by UPI

Berkeley California UPI reports a strong earthquake in the Aleutian outer islands Monday night with no tsunami. Seismologist Dr Cinna Lonmitz of the University of California says the quake, larger than the February 4 event, registered from 7.5 to 8.0 on the Richter scale at 6 35 p.m. Pacific Time.

Cop Held For Beating Own Child To Death

Alexandria policeman Larry Lantz 23 is free on 5000 bond after being charged with murder in the death of his seven month old daughter Valerie Ann Lantz. The infant died Saturday from multiple fractures after an apparent beating. Lantz had recently lived in Clarksburg West Virginia and had resigned to join Washington D C police. A hearing is set for April 5.
