California doctors to use relative values for fees study
The California Medical Association unveiled a statewide effort to set relative values for medical services. A first office visit is valued at 8 dollars while an appendectomy would be 140, Caesarean delivery 200, and tonsil operation 60, with other services half those figures. The CMA notes it cannot set exact charges but allows disciplinary action if doctors ignore the table. The plan, based on 3,700 doctor figures and computer analysis, may influence insurance benefits though overall totals remain unchanged.
