Raleigh County Scouts Celebrate 38th Girl Scout Anniversary

A county wide rally at Beckley Junior High School marked the 38th birthday of Girl Scouts with Mrs. Fray Lilly introducing Girl Scout commissioner Mrs. J. Wilbur Bays. Troops from Sophia to Crab Orchard performed songs skits and dances led by troop leaders, with many groups represented and no shortage of lively numbers.

Medical Auxiliary Tea Attracts 100 Nurses In Raleigh County

More than 100 nurses and nursing students attended a Monday afternoon tea at the Woman's Clubhouse on Park Avenue hosted by the Auxiliary to the Raleigh County Medical Society to promote nurse recruitment. Speaker Mrs. L G Houser, a nursing instructor, outlined entry requirements and emerging opportunities across government, industry, and education. The event featured decorations, a guest book, and piano accompaniment, with volunteers from Raleigh General and Beckley area facilities assisting throughout.

Reynolds and Amick Nominated for Civic Club Chair

Beckley Woman's Club nominates Mrs Wayne Reynolds and Mrs Robert L Amick for department chairman with other officers listed. New officers to be elected at April meeting. Farm Women Form Cirtsville Club in Raleigh County

Mrs. Mahlon Walker of Cirtsville is elected president of Raleigh County's fifth farm women club, with Mrs. Gilmore Williams as vice president, Mrs. Eddie Alf secretary, and Mrs. Gustave Milchen treasurer. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at Mrs. Walker's home and will seek Extension Service literature to explain club functions. The next meeting will set projects for the year.

Local Y-Teens Attend Weekend State Confab

Five members of the Woodrow Wilson High School Y-Teens Club attended the State Y-Teens Conference in Jacksons Mills with sponsor Mrs Wayne Reynolds. The event featured classes on relations planning duties fundraising and religion and included a club clinic and officer elections. Mrs J Frank Beavers of Mullens funeral attended by Mr and Mrs Roy Herndon and daughter Janice of Neville Street last week.

Beckley Woman's Club to Display Contest Entries at March 31 Meet

Beckley Woman's Club announces a March 31 general meeting at the clubhouse to display entries from state arts and crafts contests. Entries will be received March 30 morning, including paintings, dry media, hooked rugs, embroidery, and crochet.

Mrs. R. D. Kemp Installed as Group President

Mrs. H. D. Kemp will serve as president of the Women of the Beckley Presbyterian Church for the year. Installation followed a Thursday afternoon meeting and a covered dish luncheon attended by about 100 women. Officers named include Mrs. H. C. Avis historian, Mrs. H. C. Kinzer spiritual growth, Mrs. C. G. Wilton world missions, Mrs. J. W. Witherspoon church extension, Mrs. Ned H. Ragland education, Mrs. L. Gates annuities and relief, Mrs. C. S. Bepler stewardship, and Mrs. L. V. Deas assembly special causes. The program theme “Of the Household of Faith” drew from the Amsterdam World Council of Churches meeting in 1948. Annual reports were read as Mrs. W. E. S. McCormick Presbyterial president led the installation. Arrangements were coordinated by Mrs. H. L. Crawford, with decorating by Mrs. E. F. Keyser’s circle.

Open House Draws About 100 at Beckley Church Annex

About 100 residents attended an open house Sunday afternoon at the Annex to Beckley Presbyterian Church. The event showcased redecorated rooms used by the children’s division from nursery to junior department. Committee members Mrs C A Smith Mrs Fred Richmond and Mrs R P Irons planned the event. Mr and Mrs Charles Farrell of 214 South Heber Street visited his mother over the weekend at Josephine.
