Pioneer IV launched from Cape Canaveral by the Army showed an initial speed of 24 890 miles per hour and by 9 a.m. EST was 72 400 miles from Earth. NASA scientists said the probe would continue into a heliocentric orbit and pass the moon around 2 p.m. EST Wednesday, though it likely won t approach closer than about 35 000 miles.

Lack of Materials Closes Scarbro Plant
The De-Mac Manufacturing Co in Scarbro is temporarily closed because of shortages of steel paint and cartons needed for operations. Wallace Bennett of the Oak Hill Chamber of Commerce announced the closure. Owner and manager C T Deane told Fayette Countians at a Monday night meeting he hopes to resume work within a few days. The gathering took place in Bennett's Oak Hill office.

Bus Plunges Into Georgia Pond Killing At Least Nine Children
A school bus drove into a farm pond near Brookfield, Georgia, killing at least nine students and leaving two or three feared missing. About 6 or 7 children were pulled from the half submerged vehicle, with rescuers administering artificial respiration. The bus carried Wilson High School students and Negro elementary pupils. two white men helped rescue others and aid was provided by three doctors on scene. Officials said the bus was traveling about 30 mph when it entered the pond.

Auto Accident Injuries Fatal To Fayette Man
Charley Manley twenty five of Mount Carbon died after being admitted to Laird Memorial Hospital Montgomery from injuries in a Route 61 car crash between 1230 and 1 am today. The vehicle failed to negotiate an S turn, plunged down a hill about 300 feet and caught fire. Manley died of burns and internal injuries. Carroll Smith also of Mount Carbon is listed in serious condition with severe head injuries. Manley is survived by a son, his mother, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral at 2 pm Thursday at Kimberly Church of God with burial in Eads Cemetery Montgomery Heights.
