New Varieties of Spuds Displacing Old Ones
West Virginia horticulturist Dr. K C Westover reports that modern potato varieties have replaced nearly all older sorts in the state, with Cobbler the only common old variety left. The National Potato Improvement Program, begun a decade ago, seeks better looking, higher quality, disease and drought resistant potatoes. West Virginia screens seedstocks from cooperating stations, noting 30 U S varieties commercially valued in 1948, with most new types comprising a large share of certified seed potatoes. The Rural and Green Mountain varieties are being replaced by resistant strains such as Katahdin, Sabago, Menominee, Chippewa, and Kennebec, with Kennebec prized for high yield and late blight resistance.

Growing Plants From Seeds Can Be Tricky
Growing plants from seed is a tricky messy process requiring planning and care. Ensure moisture warmth and good drainage with proper containers and sterile soil. Start seeds in darkness then bring into sun after germination and transplant when second leaves appear. Maintain airflow to prevent damping off and harden seedlings before outdoor planting. Some seeds can be sown now outdoors or in cold frames for earlier blooms.
