State jobless total lowest in 26 months
West Virginia unemployment in May fell below 10 percent of the labor force for the first time in 26 months. The state said 59,900 jobless as of mid May, down 3,200 from April and 20,500 from May 1961. The civilian labor force reached 606,300, up 5,100 from April but 29,000 below a year earlier. Total employed rose 8,300 to 546,400. Coal mining shed 300 jobs while oil, gas, and quarrying added 400. Nonfarm wage and salary workers were 444,900, up 2,100. manufacturing cut 500 jobs, nonmanufacturing up 2,500 but still 4,600 below year-ago levels.
