Congressmen Start Trouble For President
Washington June 28 a half dozen congressional blocs including budget balancing Republicans began drives that threaten the president's wealth tax program. Democrats on the Ways and Means subcommittee conferred with Morganthau Oliphant Helvering and other tax experts as hearings were set to begin July 8. A nuisance tax extension passed both houses and awaits the president's signature, maintaining taxes on gasoline and postage for two years with substantial revenue. Senate criticism arose as Republicans warned of a real budget balancing tax bill, with threats to repeal the gasoline tax and push lower income brackets to raise revenue.
