Boyle Wins, Then Faces Overturned Term and New Election
Boyle's five year term as United Mine Workers president was invalidated May 1 by a federal judge due to extensive labor law violations in the 1969 election. A new election is tentatively set for December. Boyle defeated Joseph A Yablonski in a bitter 1969 campaign. Yablonski and his wife and daughter were murdered soon after. Several UMW officials have since been indicted. Boyle was convicted March 31 of funneling union funds to political campaigns, including 30,000 to Humphrey, violating the Corrupt Practices Act and Landrum Griffin Act. Prosecutors say funds moved from the union treasury through Labor's non-partisan League to private banks and then to candidates. Other contributions supported campaigns for Hays Saytor Morse Olsen. Boyle rose from miner to UMW president in 1963.
