June 25 at Oak Hill featured a golf tale as Superintendent G. B. Bobbitt hosted an out-of-town guest. Trailing 74-104 at the turn, Bobbitt advised letting the caddy finish the match. Eddie Vedrow of Scarbro aided the visitor, shooting the rest in par.
Police report from Mullens West Virginia details the discovery of a sunken garden at Howe and South Fayette streets with wild rose bushes and several fruit trees. The item notes a resident, Dick Lewis, discovering the area and comments on its unusual profusion of blossoms. A separate note covers the arrest of Lacy Dickerson, a Black man, in Pearisburg for allegedly stealing a half ton of meat from the Hoge farm on May 28, with Sheriff Kenode seeking his arrest.
Sam H. McCausland age 48, son of Confederate General John J. McCausland, started an 18 year sentence in the state penitentiary for killing farm tenant Howard West in May 1935. He admitted the shooting but claimed self defense.
Charleston news reports Health Commissioner A E McClue appointed Dr Otto Swisher Jr of Berkeley county to head the new industrial Hygiene bureau funded by the federal hygiene, labor and compensation department. The unit will conduct industrial surveys to reduce disease among state workers.
F. C. Jackson aged 23, a trusty at the four county jail, escaped after breaking a guard last night. He was serving twelve months on non-support charges and was brought to jail last April.
Sol Gross, a junk dealer, was released on $500 bond awaiting a hearing on charges of receiving stolen goods. He had been brought to the county jail after allegedly buying copper wire from Pete Wilburn. George M. Eckley of Appalachian Electric Power Co. said wire was stolen from a repair truck while linemen worked on city poles.
Barber Ben Pendleton said he did not know the petition targeted Huffman and asked to strike his name. The petition accused J L Huffman of profiting from building-supply sales to the board of education, with a hearing set for July 8.
Louis A. Johnson of Clarksburg West Virginia former national commander of the American Legion joins the campaign effort to win veteran votes for the Democratic ticket. Johnson among 14 listed to confer with President Roosevelt and James A. Farley as a possible program director for the veteran drive. He says veterans are citizens not a political bloc. West Virginia leaders headed a sharp protest during a conference appearance by Senator Joseph T. Robinson in the hall.
June 25 Beckley player Aubrey Smith upset Huntington rival Eddie Blckle 6-4 6-1 at the state closed tennis tournament. Smith, co holder of the state doubles crown for five years, controlled play. Beckley’s Her bert Stansbury beat Ivor Borarsky 6-1 6-1, and Sam Cohn, defending champion, defeated Pell Miller 6-2 6-2 and then T. C. McKinley 6-3 6-2.
Charleston June 25 The Chesapeake and Ohio railroad won permission from the public service commission to discontinue passenger service on its Powellton branch in Fayette county The railroad said the cost of one round trip daily between Powellton Elkridge and Mount Carbon exceeded the revenue
World war veterans in Beckley have cashed in bonds totaling $131,650 with most funds spent immediately on cars debts home building repair and real estate. Bank officials say about 90 percent are cashing in and the rush is over though a few bonds still await processing in Charleston.
The Raleigh Baptist association final meeting of a two day convention of the Baptist Sunday Schools of Raleigh and Fayette counties nominated Rev. B. L. Jones for reelection as president. Bert Bleau and Mrs. H. J. Birt were named for vice president and secretary treasurer. Attendance exceeded 200. Speakers included Rev. J. H. Hayes on salvation through baptism and Rev. B. L. Jones on Bible teaching in Sunday Schools. The convention wraps up with a consecration service led by Rev. W. W. Williams.
Haile Selassie, exiled emperor of Ethiopia, departed by train for Geneva to mount Ethiopia's final diplomatic stand against Italy. Fewer than 50 watched the departure, a stark contrast to the thousands who cheered his arrival earlier in June.
Pittsburgh June 25 The Baltimore and Ohio railroad announced seven new passenger trains will join daily service June 28 to West Virginia points. A Parkersburg Marietta and Wheeling service will reach Pittsburgh at 11 45 a m and depart for the return trip at 5 p m.
Governor Alf Landon and his family arrived in Denver to start a Colorado vacation. A cheering crowd greeted the Kansas Republican nominee as he stepped from the train. The Landons have leased a ranch for the summer about 75 miles north of Denver.
An all day meeting and baptism will be held Sunday at Skelton church concluding a three weeks revival. Reverend Grant Stephens will preach. The public is invited to come and bring a basket dinner.
Fargo dispatch reports Governor Walter Wellford extended his edge over former Governor William Langer in the Republican gubernatorial nomination while regular Democratic candidates in North Dakota widened their margin against progressive opposition. Returns from 583 of 2,242 precincts show Wellford with 33,928 votes to Langer's 22,810.
A man was shot during a strike disturbance at the Atlas Uniform Cap company on Broad Street. Police detained owner Herman Goldstein, 42, for questioning after the incident in Philadelphia on June 25.
Prince Dickens testified in a murder trial over the January 31 killing of Newt Holland at Dicken's Dry Creek home. Dickens, a co defendant, described confronting Holland after Holland fired and approached with a pistol as Dickens and Hannah returned from Sun Dial. He said he threw rocks, Hannah fired, and Holland was killed. neighbors notified officers and Dickens was jailed next day.
In Philadelphia the Roosevelt rules committee urged scrapping the old two thirds requirement for the Democratic convention. Debates delayed as platform and credentials work continued. New York Massachusetts and Indiana joined Southern states in opposing future nomination by simple majority.
Samples from six county pools Fitzpatrick Trap Hill Cirtsville Skelton Artie and Clearcreek were sent to Charleston today for analysis by G L Kelso director of sanitary engineering. Reports expected within a week.
New York June 25 weak ness of steel issues put a chill on today's stock market. Chrysler and several others advanced to new six year highs early but most slipped back by midday. United States Steel and Bethlehem fell about two, and Youngstown Sheet and Tube declined over one.
