An Air Force B 25 with nine crew members crashed on Spruce Mountain near Circleville Pendleton County West Virginia. The aircraft departed Olmsted Field Middletown Pennsylvania at 2 24 a m en route to Offutt Nebraska. A second 150 600 kilowatt steam electric unit began operation at the Philip Sporn plant at Graham Station. HONOLULU a vast cloud of mysterious origin blanked 1 200 000 square miles of the Pacific. Weather Bureau meteorologist R H Simpson said it might last a day or a week. At Wake Island 2000 miles west of Hawaii the cloud rose to 16 000 feet. Near Hawaii it had a 7 000 foot ceiling. Possible causes include wind blown African desert sands explosive eruption near New Guinea or an atomic explosion. Concentration of ions in the air could result in such a condition. The Eniwetok Grounds 600 miles southwest of Wake lie ahead of atomic tests scheduled for summer.
