Juanita Simmons, secretary of the MYF and a cloth grade student at Glen Rogers High, right travels with another girl to Charlestown. They plan to depart Thursday and return Sunday under MYF counselor Mrs. W. S. Brooks supervision.
Oceana resident Areninta Cook died at Welch Hospital at 8 a.m. Tuesday aged 53. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Oceana Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Rollins. burial in Cook Cemetery. She was born January 4, 1887, to Jacob and Amanda Lester Cook. Survives three sisters Bessie Dyke Inez Dempsey and Mabel Saunders. Body at Evans Funeral Home.
A Cyclone CYCLONE A singing convention is set for June 21 at the Christian Tabernacle Cyclone Ladies Aid Society. The Revelator Quartet will perform and other singing groups are invited to participate. Mrs Walter Farmer and children spend summer in Mount Morrison Michigan with husband and father employed there.
Carl Edward Vaughn a 27 year old Hookersville man and Baltimore and Ohio Railway employee died in a home fire sparked by an electrical storm. Neighbors reported a lightning bolt and Vaughan apparently watching television when the house burned, trapping him inside. The residence owned by Mr and Mrs Stanley Dean was destroyed. Vaughn’s body was taken to Waters Funeral Home as investigators from Summersville detemine the cause.
Kopperston Presbyterian Church vacation Bible school ended with an average daily attendance of 35 from a 60 enrollment. The project was a miniature Palestinian village. Officers included Superintendent Reece Daniels and Secretary Mrs. Ted Sauls with several assistants. teachers spanned first to third grades and music directors were Marcia Rankin and Kaye Estep.
Mrs. Vernia Cordelia Mullins 63 Holiness minister collapsed and died at home in Otsego after hanging laundry. Born March 12, 1895 she was daughter of Frank and Sarah Ramsey. Survived by husband George six sons three daughters three brothers three sisters 38 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Falling Rock Clay County with Rev Woodrow Jones. burial in family cemetery. Body to be moved from Robertson Foglesong Funeral Home Thursday.
Dr. Robert T. Godby 9 son of Mrs. C. E. Bibb of Minden Road, graduates from Oklahoma State University May 25 with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He previously earned arts and sciences degrees at West Virginia University in 1953. He is married with two children, Michael 7 and Lee Ann 4, and plans to open an area animal hospital.
Wyoming county authorities investigate a burglary at Allied Enterprises in East Pineville run by G. E. Kirk. Twenty cartons of cigarettes were stolen. no guns taken from the combined merchandise store and dry cleaning business.
Two men were seriously injured in a Tuesday night car wreck near Jesse Wyoming County. Paul Cook 34 and James Haynes 30 were thrown from the vehicle that skidded and flipped, with Sheriff Bert Short citing excessive speed. Both were hospitalized in Mullens in fair condition.
Oswell Cook Jr. aged 17 of Pineville sustained minor gunshot wounds from a buckshot blast. He was treated at Stevens Clinic Hospital and reported in good condition. The incident occurred when a younger boy handling a shotgun accidentally discharged it.
Enrollment of 366 delegates travels to Jackson's Mill for the Rhododendron Girls State general election. Federalists Barbara Cook of Mullens and Jane O'Brien of Buckhannon lead for governor with other major offices listed for each party as candidates. The inauguration will be led by Supreme Court Judge Chauncey Browning after the vote.
Mr and Mrs J W Slack mark their 22nd anniversary last Sunday. Married in 1936 by Rev Clarence Figgett at the Baptist Parsonage Mount Hope they are parents of Billy Bobby Mary Ann and another daughter Joyce Plumb of Mount Hope. Mr Slack was a machinist at New River Coal Co. Mount Hope. Mrs Slack graduated Beckley College two weeks ago and plans to teach.
The West Virginia Sports Car Club will hold a state wide rally in Oak Hill starting at 2 p m Sunday. Sponsored by the LaFayette Contemporary Sports Car Club the event will take place on the Kreger parking lot with about 50 cars expected to participate on county roads and later regroup at a site to be announced. Oak Hill rally chair Afiss Barbara Carpenter leads the efforts with state president Frank Cross of Charleston and state vice president Al Gannon of Oak Hill set to participate.
Dr. Ivan Bush Jr of Oak Hill Hospital attended the University of Virginia alumni day with Dr. Hugh R. Butt of the Mayo Foundation delivering the main address on Changing Concepts of Liver Function. Five Virginia medical faculty studies were presented. Dr. Bush returned Sunday.
Richard Boyd, 23, was sentenced to two days in jail and fined 59.50 by Magistrate Virgil Lyons on a driving while drunk charge. His 1951 model car was demolished when he went over a high embankment on Fayette Mountain Sunday night, Deputy Sheriff Fred O’Boyle said.
Four members of the new Wyoming County Health Board were named by the county court at a regular session. The appointees include Herman Hopkins Ray Toler Robert Browning and Dr Ward Wylie with W. Worrell named by the Board of Education as the fifth member.
Incumbent Mayor Woodrow W. Cook and two Citizens Party colleagues E. B. Atkins and C. G. Russell were reelected to two-year terms. Cook won 901 to 369 over Luther W. Kerns. Atkins led with 854 votes in a four-man race for two commissioner posts, Russell had 745, and Tracy W. Hylton received 479. Precinct totals and notes on nearby candidate activity are included.
Tito Glen Rogers and Cam Boyd Cook and Paris Bailey were sentenced to six months in the Wyoming County Jail and fined 30 each for contributing to the delinquency of minors. A third man is indicted and sought. Warrants issued by Jess Lafferty and Gladys Lafferty, Ravencliff, parents of two 12 year old girls who are cousins.
The Pythian Sisters Temple 132 will hold its next meeting at 8 p.m. on June 23. A Flag Day program is planned and refreshments will be served, announced at Monday’s gathering.
Fayette County 4-H pools will host swimming classes starting June 16 at 9 am. Beginner classes are for ages six to two. senior life saving requires 16 years or high school junior. Red Cross instructors lead all sessions. Beginners charge 3.75 for 15 sessions. senior life saving is free. Registration at pools or via 4-H camp Fayetteville 149-W-1. Intermediate and adult classes to follow.
The Kopperston Presbyterian church vacation Bible school starts with the Pioneer group at 7 30 am and the junior section at 9 am daily. Pioneer staff includes superintendent John Paynter and secretary Mrs Paynter with teachers Mrs Avill Grosse Mrs Raymond Jarrett. The junior section is led by superintendent Reece Daniels with teachers C R Rankin Mrs Richard Myers Mrs Cleve Lester and Rev James Shott who directs the music. Both groups report 42 enrollments and classes run through Friday.
