Grand Jury Declines To Indict Ballard On Forgery Charges
Raleigh County Grand Jury in a one day session refused to indict George W. Ballard former Pinecrest Sanitarium business manager on forgery charges. Ballard had previously escaped action as magistrate dismissed warrants for lack of evidence of intent to defraud. The state presented witnesses including Pinecrest employees and a state investigator. Ballard collapsed in a downtown Beckley store and was hospitalized with his condition listed as fair. The jury also returned one murder indictment and thirty six other indictments against various individuals for offenses ranging from grand larceny to breaking and entering and drunken driving.
