Judge Clay S. Crouse urged about 90 defendants to plead guilty to aid national defense. He said time in the penitentiary is the unpatriotic service during the emergency and those pleading guilty may receive probation to enable military service or essential work. The session opened with the June docket and 14 pleas resulted, with more anticipated.
President Roosevelt and Soviet Foreign Commissar Molotov reached a full understanding on creating a second front in Europe in 1942. The White House disclosed unity on speeding war material deliveries and on postwar cooperation, noting the talks as useful for closer cooperation among the United States and Soviet Union. Molotov returned home after his Washington visit.
The AFL Window Glass Cutters League of America called a strike that idleled over 600 union members in Charleston Kanawha City and Clarksburg West Virginia. About 250 at Libby Owens Ford Kanawha City 200 at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Clarksburg and 180 at Fource Glass Clarksburg operations walked out amid stalled wage talks. The strike affects four major operating companies in 10 cities with old contract expired March 8 and daily basis work since.

West Virginia power remains ample as Appalachian Electric Power Company and Mononghela West Penn Public Service Company report plans to rationing unlikely. Appalachian will add nearly 200 000 kilowatts at Cabin Creek near Charleston within a year, and Monongahela will add 35 000 kilowatts at Rivesville in Marion county. The Cabin Creek unit one should start by July 15 increasing output, with further units in subsequent months and next year. Water power contributes significantly to Appalachian capacity, aided by improved Tennessee Valley water conditions.
Dramatic reports say American forces broke up two Japanese fleets, repelled 180 enemy aircraft, and saved the Hawaiian Islands. Admiral Nimitz notes many enemy ships sunk or damaged in three days of fighting, with Japan suffering its greatest naval disaster.
