Washington reports major naval clash as American and Japanese fleets clash near Midway Island after a daylight raid. Pearl Harbor briefing from Admiral Chester W. Nimitz outlined strategic implications while naval experts assess the engagement’s significance in the ongoing Pacific war.

An explosion at the Elwood arsenal near Joliet Illinois destroyed the shipping building of Group Two. At least 21 people died and 24 were injured with 28 escaping unharmed.
