Gulf Road Closure Explained by State Road Engineer
In a Mullens Advocate letter S E Bradley acting division engineer of the state road commission explains surfacing the Winding Gulf road. He notes the need for three smooth stone courses to achieve a satisfactory riding surface and discusses plans to build State Route 12 toward the Raleigh county line this season. He warns detours between Raleigh county the Winding Gulf field and Mullens remain poor earth roads due to narrow rights of way and heavy rains. He says macadam open during non construction periods slowed progress and proved costly. Some grade sections have been rebuilt up to six times to achieve a uniform surface and half-built sections cannot yield a smooth road.
