A 14 year old Wirt County boy, Melvin Wayne Hill, was electrocuted after contact with an electric fence while returning from a creek swim. His 11 year old brother Darrel and companion Robert Showalter, 15, were in swimsuits nearby. Darrel and Showalter crawled under the fence but the wire struck Melvin in the chest and he died instantly.
U S District Judge Thomas J Michie in Harrisonburg Va ordered an end to school segregation in Winchester and demanded a non discriminatory pupil plan be in place by July 14.

Eight East German crewmen seized the Friedrich Wolf after drunkenly shaming the captain and engineer, fled with five women and a child toward West Berlin under machinegun fire from pursuing patrols. West Berlin police aided the refugees escape and no one was reportedly wounded. The captain and engineer later returned the 500 ton boat to East Berlin under police escort. One refugee, identified as Peter C, described the events. Communists fired as the boat diverted toward the Landwehr Canal.
