Market day next is Thursday at 1 30 p.m. Market Manager C C Hutchison urged local produce. May Apple root offered 25 cents per pound until September. other roots include mild ginger 4 cents, yellow root 2 a pound, wild ginseng 16 a pound, lady slipper 1 a pound, blood root 20 cents, sassafras bark 35 cents. Roots must be cleaned and dried.

Beckley Chamber of Commerce managing director W C Sydnor Jr will travel to Chapel Hill North Carolina next week for a week long course in Chamber work at the University of North Carolina The class runs from June 16 to June 22 Sydnor previously attended a similar fundamentals course at Michigan State College in Lansing Michigan He expects a three year program ending with a diploma next year

Johnson Rites Set For Saturday in Coal City Church
Funeral services are planned for Russell Johnson 59 of Lilybrook at 2 p m Saturday in Coal City Community Church conducted by Rev L A Garten. He died after a heart attack at home near Lillybrook Coal Co. He was born December 10 1898 at Sandstone and leaves wife Ella Mae, daughter Joyce Toney of Hampton VA, two brothers Ernest and Stanley, a sister Mae Underwood, a half brother Roosevelt Dick, and one grandchild. Burial in Sunset Memorial Park.

At Woodrow Wilson High School, 16 students completed the distributive education course in 1996 97 with nine local firms providing part time work. Total wages reached 7371.04 dollars for the year as students logged 12.06 hours of work. top honors went to Helen Linsky, Marlene Dilton, and Carol Jackson, with Linsky also receiving the Sears Roebuck Award and a $30 savings bond.
