Beckley Social Security Office officials announced June visitation in five communities to assist claimants for old age and survivors insurance, disability records freezes, and program questions. Oak Hill visits at the state employment office Tuesdays 9 am to 4 pm. Hinton June 14 and 28 at 11 am. Ansted June 27 at 10 am. Ameagile and Edwight June 21 at 10 am and 10:30 pm.
One case was continued this week in Raleigh County Circuit Court. L. A. Eppard versus Mary F. Duncan was ordered continued until the next term of court.
Formosan UCLA student Miss Lee Hwa Ya won the $1 000 Samuel Goldwyn Award for creative writing. Goldwyn praised her story The Sorrow at the End of the Yangtze River among 80 entries. Lee, who came from Taiwan University in 1953, cried as she accepted the plaque.
A Ra leigh County Health Department clinic at Marsh Fork on June 5 administered polio shots to 236 people with age breakouts from prenatal to ten years. A second clinic at Shady Spring High School on June 6 counted about 323 vaccinations, with Dr. S A Ford assisted by Mary Greco and Viola St. Clair. Through the recent clinics 1324 shots have been given and vaccine remains available for county children.
Mabscott resident Alfred Tincher was held in Raleigh County Jail at 9 30 a m on a driving while drunk charge. He was arrested by Mabscott Police Chief Trenton Stover.
Wells Elementary School PTA will meet at 11 30 a m Monday in McAlpin Community Hall. President Henry Hunt announced the gathering to discuss school programs and upcoming events.
A Mount Hope man, Jeff Adair Davis, was turned over to military authorities at 5 p.m. Wednesday after being charged with being absent without official leave from the Navy. He had been held in Raleigh County Jail for safe keeping.
Raleigh County residents received 253,943 dollars in social security benefits for 1955, with 2,028 retired workers and 3,468 dependents or survivors in monthly payments. Nationwide, old-age and survivor benefits rose by 16 percent to 4.5 million retirees, while total program payments neared 19.7 billion dollars since inception.
