Forestry Camp Opening Triggers Inmate Relocations Statewide
Charleston news reports the opening of West Virginia's first forestry camp for youth offenders on June 14, enabling rapid reassignments of inmates. It clears the way to integrate La kin and Pruntytown industrial schools, move the Negro girls’ school from Huntington to Lakin, and join the Huntington children’s home with Elkins’ white-child institution. The McKendree home will be abandoned and its occupants moved to the new camp in Fayette County within days. Up to 125 youths expected after 30 days, with initial placements from Pruntytown and Lakin. The camp near Davis in Tucker County lies about a quarter mile from Blackwater Falls. Initial funding came from the 1956 legislature with an $86,799 annual appropriation and $35,000 for the remainder of the year. Youths 16 to 21 may be committed for up to two years with a program of work, education, recreation and counseling. Initial tasks involve cleanup for a major park improvement halted by a strike.
