Minden Couple Lose Savings in Sunday Flames

OAK HILL A retired miner and his wife lost their life savings in a Sunday fire. Fire Chief Arthur Akers said Luther and Mrs. Page of Minden claimed 20 000 in total loss including 15 000 in silver and folding money stored in various places around the house. The two story home owned by New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Co. burned from a coal cook stove. The Pages had no insurance and hydrants or water supply were lacking. Nine live chickens also perished in the basement.

Besoco Woman Fined For Driving Without License

Pearl Mae Smith of Besoco was fined 25 dollars and costs after a Magistrate J P Meadows hearing for driving without an operator’s license. She was arrested Sunday by state police. Raleigh Countain Ray Wiles of Pemberton is slated for arraignment tomorrow before Meadows on a driving while intoxicated charge. Wiles was arrested Sunday by state police.

Man Posts Bond on Hinton Charge in Ra leigh jail record

Candria Virginia man Gordon Otey posted a $60.50 bond at Raleigh County jail on a drunken driving charge but remained held on a Hinton police warrant for hit and run. Jailer's office said he was arrested Friday by State Police Trooper C M England.

Thomas in Washington to discuss TV revocation

Robert R. Thomas Jr. of WOAY Oak Hill travels to Washington to discuss the FCC revocation of Channel 4 assignment. He had sought Channel 4 for Oak Hill then Fayetteville, alleging the move aimed to circumvent the commission. The FCC cancelled the assignment Friday.

Family Feud Shooting Leaves Botman Wounded in Sophia

Sophia resident George Botman Jr. is hospitalized with shotgun wounds to the face left arm and leg after an early morning shooting in Sophia. Bruno Molon is jailed in Raleigh County on felonious assault charges pending investigation. Botman says Molon shot him from behind as he fled toward a hill after an argument with his wife. State Police confirm the shooting and the hospital reports medical removal of 100 pellets.

Storm damages crops and buildings across Beckley area

Violent winds hail and heavy rain struck Beckley and nearby towns Sunday causing crop and building damage. No deaths or injuries were reported. Roofs were the main losses with power outages and several property claims filed. In Charleston a 76 mph gust damaged the West Side, with seven fires from downed lines and shattered windows.

Mash Barrels Destroyed on Ellison Ridge Road

State Police reported 12 barrels of mash destroyed on Ellison Ridge Road at 10 p.m. Saturday. Trooper R. O. Warfe said the operator was not found but he and Trooper Eng land broke up eight full barrels described as really working and four other barrels about half full.
