Moonshiners warned as judge blasts gun toters
Federal Judge Harry Watkins, based in Beckley, expressed ire at moonshiners who carry firearms. In Huntington he sentenced John Henry Stumbo of Mingto County to a year and a day for operating an illicit still, rejecting probation after learning he had a shotgun at arrest, claiming it was for rattlesnake protection.

Hit Run Driver Held On Drunk Driving Charge
Thomas Lloyd Martin of Fayetteville is jailed in Raleigh County awaiting a hearing on driving while drunk and leaving the scene after a Route 19 21 collision with Lee Roy Davis of Prosperity at 9 30 p m. Damages were estimated at $500. Martin was arrested by State Police in Fayette County Thursday night.

Federal Court orders probation for young kin der in moonshine cases
In a two day U S District Court session Judge Harry E Watkins placed 18 year old Delmer Joe Kinder on a three year probation after a moonshine embezzlement case. Kinder, married in February, faced a sobbing wife as he received the sentence. Also sentenced were Carlis Lee Kirk Jr 27 to three years in Lewisburg Penitentiary and fines for moonshine transportation, Luther James Jarrett 32 to a year and a day plus fines for possession and transport, and Shirley Mae Edmiston three years probation for embezzlement. Several defendants faced probation denials and prison terms. the court noted long criminal records for some and required restitution where applicable. An investigation was noted into absentees James Edward Walker and Bobby Russell Bryant.

Michael Late Benedum famed oil wildcatter and philanthropist, died at his Pittsburgh home at 90. He built a vast oil empire, led Benedum Trees Oil Co. and allied firms, was named Oil Man of the Century in 1955, and gave heavily to Bridgeport, Pittsburgh, and other causes. Burial will be in Homewood Cemetery.
