The Public Service Commission weighed an application to purchase two Fayette County water systems serving Lachelly and Summerlee from the New River Company for 8500 dollars. The hearing yesterday disclosed the proposed sale and price.
Harvard University coach Lloyd Jordan visiting relatives in Mt Hope spoke to the Lions Club about the tough remaining football schedule, naming Columbia and Army as formidable opponents. The meeting featured songs by Betty Jo Fox and reports from Boy Scouts of Troop 91 on recent Educational Tours, including the National Jamboree.

Body to Northfork from Evans Funeral Home last night where it will be in state until the funeral hour. Mrs. Stella Jones was honored at a surprise birthday party by the Woman's Society of Glen Rogers Community Church. The event, held Friday evening in the church basement, featured games and prizes awarded to Mrs. Ruth York Mrs. Snow Dilton Mrs. J Keywood and Mrs. Helen McClung. Attendees included many church members and friends from Marianna Milan and Glen Rogers.
Funeral services were held at 11 a m for Alfred William Lewis who died at 11 22 p m Saturday at Beckley Hospital from a heart condition. A retired miner aged 69, rites were from the Macen home of his son W A Lewis rather than Macen Community Church as previously announced.
Oak Hill Junior Chamber of Commerce planning and fund raising committee will meet its board of directors tonight to map future activities and projects. New appointees include Bob Titlow Walter Cominsky Charles McCain and J R McDonald. The group recently heard committee reports for the State American Legion Junior Baseball Tournament and appointed Bill Hutchison public relations director and scrapbook editor. Guest speaker Hugh Bosely WV Tech athletics manager praised Oak Hill athletes attending Tech and showed game films. Next meeting set for 6 30 p m Monday Aug 7 at the City Diner.
Six area youths have enlisted in the United States Army and Air Force at the Charleston Recruiting Station. Names listed include Robert E. Smith Bloomingrose Jack Dontey Deep Water William N. Lockhard Montgomery Charles E. Adkins Page Carrot E. Coleman Page and Freddie L. Blackwell Ward.
Mrs Ray Bowles of Wyoming was feted with a stork shower at Mrs Carl Thompsons home on Thursday evening. The honoree opened gifts and refreshments were served to Mrs Howard Cook Mrs Jimmy Hilton Mrs Raymond Mullens Mrs Don Winters Mrs Fred Thomas Mrs Pearl Workman Mrs Florence Perdew Miss Zida Cook and Miss Betty Bumgardner.

Mullens High School girls will perform the skit Baking the FHA Cake at the state Future Homemakers of America Conference at Jackson's Mill from Wednesday to Saturday. Sponsor Mrs. Wood Cook accompanies the group. Officers Mary Kathryne Lusk Kitty Moler Virginia Cassinelli and Sarah McNutt will attend with six others and two members will participate in Building the FHEA Emblem on the final night. Lusk will donate the Mullens Chapter's $20 check to the new State FHA Camp on opening night.
Mullens funeral services for David Bateman 62 of Coal Grove Ohio will be at 2 p m Wednesday at Coal Grove Methodist Church. He died Sunday after six weeks illness. Bateman worked for National Mine Service Co of Logan and leaves a wife four children and many relatives in Beckley area. He belonged to Logan Christian Church and Masonic Lodge 151 Mullens. Born in North Carolina he is survived by six sisters and three brothers with several in Kentucky Tennessee and Virginia.
A section of the Ma then mine in the West Gulf Coal Company was closed today after a slate fall. Superintendent Eric George said normal operation would resume tomorrow once the state is cleared, noting a manpower shortage expected today due to an unusual event.
Alden Warren Olsen and Billy Ray Adams, both 18 from Pineville, were accepted by the United States Recruiting Office in Welch for four year enlistments. After processing in Huntington, the Pineville High School graduates will be sent to the Great Lakes Training Station in Illinois for basic training.
A parked car belonging to Joseph Lester Thompson of Coal City was struck by Eugene Grimmett of MacArthur in Crab Orchard around 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The collision caused about 300 dollars in damage, according to state police.
