Earl Cooper May Harvest 2900 Bushels of Tomatoes
Earl Cooper of Maple Fork Road expects to harvest at least 2500 bushels of tomatoes on what may be Raleigh County's largest patch. He set 10000 plants, lost a few, and plans to sell 10 cent per pound tomatoes locally with canning sales to follow. County agent H B Thomas notes the estimate as conservative and WVU extension agent W H Roberts calls it possibly the state’s largest patch. Cooper credits Farm Bureau guidance and lime and mineral fertilizer use for high yields. His grandson Edsil Armentrout plans 3000 plants and to fund county 4 H camp with tomato proceeds.
