Beckley chosen as Fuller Brush Company field headquarters in celebration of the 50th anniversary. Warren J. Metz, formerly of Wheeling, named field manager and to reside with his wife and daughter in Beckley. Office to be temporary at his home as operations expand to serve Beckley and surrounding area.
DAV in Beckley Chapter 18 led by Eugene Cole launches a membership drive aiming for 200000 nationwide as National Commander Maas urges growth. Cole stresses that increased DAV membership boosts services for war disabled veterans and urges eligible veterans to join, with next meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Building American Legion Office.
The Mabscott Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a Thursday night picnic that netted about 288 dollars. Bob McCollum served as general chairman. About 223 people attended, with funds earmarked for new uniforms and equipment for the department.
Anne Kidwell of Beaver paid a five dollar fine at Beckley Police Headquarters after being charged with running a red light. She was arrested at 2 40 a m Monday by city police. Dr Charles R Daniel, a Philadelphia General Hospital intern, was among 108 selected from 550 applicants for the one year program. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and West Virginia University. his parents are Dr and Mrs Ross P Daniel of Beckley.
A Selective Service Board spokesman announced forty six men have been called for pre induction examination at Beckley Main Recruiting Station. The Register photo contest invites amateur and professional photographers to submit black and white prints at least 3 by 4 inches. Entries become property of Beckley Newspapers Corp. and will not be retained. Model releases are required, family of employees excluded, and judges’ decisions final. Winners receive a certificate and a print. winning negatives go to The Register after publication.
West Virginia’s Army Reserve program speeds up discharges to create a ready reserve. About 4700 to 9000 veterans who joined before June 19 1951 will be released by July next year. Chief Warrant Officer Fred L. Bryant said many served in Korea and carried a five to six year obligation after active duty. Inactive reserves will move to a ready reserve control group as part of an Army wide plan to trim unneeded manpower. Bryant urged veterans to contact the West Virginia Military District for details.
Lynn M Powers appointed scoutmaster for a newly organized Beaver troop with Rev Everette W Powers as cubmaster. Judge Norman Knapp announced the formation with sponsorship by First Baptist Church of Beaver. Den mothers and a committee led by Moody Rice support the unit, with several boys named as cub and scout members and Explorer Scouts.
The Wiley family in East Beckley plans to celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Wiley on Oct 30 1957. Six children surprised the couple with a weekend reunion at 102 Catlett St. Attendees included Ruth Horvath Detroit Clara Ryan Baltimore Mary Starr Clair Shores and Earlie Hambrick East Beckley. Dennis Wiley Brookville Ohio and Jewel Dean Isleton Calif and Faith Sherwood Fullerton Calif were absent. Margaret Duncan Hayward Calif flew home for the surprise visit, her first in six years, prompting others to join the reunion.
The Beckley Junior Chamber of Commerce will run a volunteer election worker school to staff 2 precincts on election day. About 100 volunteers are needed, with workers assigned to precincts near their homes. The effort supports a three year levy for recreational funds, starting Jan 1, 1957, seeking city help from local attorneys and officials.
Harry W. Stewart of the Veterans Administration warns lenders and builders to provide accurate real estate tax estimates to veteran buyers. Improper estimates have caused higher monthly payments after closing, potentially jeopardizing loan approvals. Stewart advocates checking local tax authorities and comparing similar properties to improve accuracy.
Beckley will host the 38th Greenbrier Dairy Products Co anniversary celebration next summer following the 37th anniversary success this weekend. The Beckley plant drew 636 attendees, the largest company event yet, with welcome by H F Hutchinson and guest speaker Dr W W Phart. Emblems and service pins honored long service, with multiple employees receiving 5, 10, and 11 year awards across offices in Beckley Charleston Logan and Lewisburg.
